Uganda's Envoy to UAE Named Permanent Representative to IRENA

Uganda's Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, H.E. Irene Florence Persis Wekiya, has been appointed as the country's Permanent Representative to the Abu Dhabi-based International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

Ambassador Irene Wekiya formally presented her credentials as Uganda's Permanent Representative to Adnan Z. Amin, Director-General of the IRENA, at a brief ceremony held on Sunday 13th March 2016 at the IRENA's newly-inaugurated headquarters in eco-friendly Masdar City, Abu Dhabi.

The move makes Uganda the 38th member of IRENA (out of 145 members and 31 States in Accession) to designate a Permanent Representative to the inter-governmental Organisation and the 9th from Africa.  Uganda was a founding member of IRENA and senior Ugandan Ministers and Officials regularly attend the IRENA General Assembly and Council Meetings held in Abu Dhabi.  The country attaches great importance to the renewable energy sector and believes that only through a concerted collaborative approach the goal of sustainable energy future can be realized for Ugandans. The accreditation to IRENA marks a significant step in this direction and will promote all-round collaboration between the Agency's members and its Secretariat on projects related to policy and technology development, as well as partnerships to support Uganda and other countries in their transition to a sustainable clean energy future.

The presentation of credentials further demonstrates the reconfirmation of the strategic vision and commitment of Uganda's Head of State and Government to renewable clean energy and the broad socio-economic benefits open to Uganda.

 IRENA is an inter-governmental Organisation that supports countries in their transition to a sustainable energy future and serves as the principal platform for international cooperation. It was founded in Bonn, Germany, in January 2009. It promotes the widespread adoption and sustainable use of all forms of renewable energy in the pursuit of sustainable development. The African Clean Energy Corridor, which includes Uganda, is one of the major achievements of IRENA thus far.
In the discussion with the Director-General at the ceremony, the Ugandan Permanent Representative  reiterated Uganda¡¯s continued support and commitment to IRENA's Mission and Vision; aware of ongoing joint efforts to increase adoption of clean and secure renewable energy for a low-carbon future trajectory of African Energy and Uganda energy mix. She expressed full willingness and readiness to work with the Director-General and his excellent Team in IRENA to consolidate the good relations between Uganda and IRENA for mutual benefit of a sustainable future for ALL and the success of her Mission.

The Director-General expressed his appreciation for Uganda's ongoing efforts at realizing its potential in clean renewable energy deployment in areas like rural electrification, enabling policy and legislative frameworks being put in place and renewed his commitment to continued IRENA support.

Amb. Irene Wekiya was accompanied to the credentials ceremony by her Deputy, Amb. Mbabazi-Araali, and Mr. Daniel Ssekabembe, the Third Secretary at the Embassy. Ugandan personnel in IRENA also showed support and extended their congratulations to the Ambassador.
